headed across a very large swath of the u.s. coastline. it's got a lot of people worried. >> that's right. right now we're going to update you on exactly where hurricane earl is and where the track of hurricane earl is expected as the day moves on. first, though, a quick update on a security breach that happened at miami's airport. this was earlier this morning. the feds are now confirming that a passenger was taken into custody and that the bomb squad was brought in after a suspicious item was spotted in the baggage screening area. we have our john zarella on it. he's going to be joining us live with the very latest on this investigation in a few moments. >> first let's get to hurricane earl making its move up the east coast. the category 2 storm has weak epd now. it still poses a threat. right now earl is centered about 100 miles off the coast of cape hatteras, north carolina. storm warnings and watches stretch all the way to canada now. >> and hurricane earl is barrelling up the eastern seaboard, as you can see from the track here. it puts eastern long island as well as new england in

. but they do extend, big waves for many miles. the eye of the storm is disappearing on us. we could be undergoing an eyewall replacement cycle and that may not have time to fully wind back up. now the waves are probably the biggest story with this storm. the beach erosion is going to be incredible. we have 14-foot waves off of hatteras, 13-foot waves off of wilmington. the wave action is going to be incredible going all the way up the east coast to cape cod during the day tomorrow. hurricane warnings cape cod, hurricane warnings from virginia beach southward to just outside of jacksonville, north carolina near camp lejeune. as far as our commuter models go, everything is taking it offshore at this point. the only close call is out there at nantucket, martha's vineyard, chatam. it should be a category 3 and then a category 2 by the time it's south of new england, weakening to a category 1 as it impacts either down east maine, they're probably going to get hit good saturday morning. the tropical storm force winds, the worst where stephanie is located, and then as everyone drives to wo

the guns that the suspect had have now been told to us to be starter pistols. starter pistols. the kind of pistols people use when they set off a race or a track meet or something like that. the pipe bombs that he had attached to his body, they're said to be lethal. they searched that suspect's house in wheaton. they said they found four more devices which they removed from the house and safely detonated. little by little, we're learning more and more about how this hostage incident played out. this is what the lobby of the discovery building looked like today after that police takedown of a suspect in the hostage situation. it all came down yesterday around lunch time. 1:00 p.m. police descend on the discovery channel headquarters in silver spring. an armed man takes three people hostage. chief tom manger said he had a feeling it was not going to end well. >> he had a wide range of emotions. he was up, he was down, he would come down a little sometime. we weren't making progress. >> reporter: the suspect, james jay lee, threatened to kill the hostages, threatened to kill hims

hurricane, winds us0 miles-an-hour. it is fewer than 160 miles from cape hatteras, north carolina. the storm is expected to pass near the outer banks within the next few hours packing hurricane force winds that extend 70 miles from the storm's center. nasa has been using photographs for the last four days. you can see how the storm has been growing and rolling closer to the coast and closer to north carolina. the first strong bands of rain have already started to hit outer banks of north carolina. it is hit and miss you know how those bands go. today police went door-to-door to make sure everybody had received evacuation notices because the state's governor warned once the storm hits folks who decided to stay are pretty much on their own. we have extensive team fox coverage throughout the night. rick leventhal on the east end of long island in montauk. monitoring the storm, first jonathan serrie in north carolina. i'm told the winds are come and go? >> reporter: they are indeed. the winds are picking up and continue to pick up at a slow, but stable pace. you said it was hit and miss as far a

efforts. we have coverage all up and down the coast this morning. and, of course, sam starts us off from the north carolina coast in atlantic beach, where everyone is on high alert. good morning, sam. >> good morning, robin. the waters are chopping up this morning because earl is about 350 miles away from where we're standing right now. as george said, bigger and stronger than it ever was. at 145 miles per hour, this storm is just ten miles away. 10-mile-per-hour change in the winds, from a rare category 5 hurricane. here's the latest track on earl. here's what is expected this storm will do over the next two or three days. that is move along the carolina coastline, with hurricane-force winds to be felt here. to continue to curve up the shoreline, with hurricane-force winds to be felt near cape cod. and all the way along, we'll see waves in the 12 to 16-foot category. earl may have been a storm that was difficult to get everyone's attention with. but now, it's a storm that demands attention. >> this eye looks about 25 miles wide. >> reporter: it's an exclusive view of the eye of earl. fr

shot there, but we are expecting conditions to go downhill. now, what about the u.s.? are we going to see any impact here? you bet we are, the same we did with earl and danielle. we've got a high risk of rip currents here on the atlantic coast, particularly bad into the carolinas. another thing that we're keeping our eye on is that disturbance in the gulf of mexico. maybe a little moisture from karl got wrapped up in this, but this is an upper level disturbance. right now it doesn't have a circulation, so it's not a tropical storm or a tropical depression. it's a wave or cluster of thunderstorms. the concern here is not necessarily that it has much time to turn into a tropical storm, but it a es going to bring torrential downpours. the rain from houston toward the south and west. flood watches in effect here. 3 to 5 inches expected and texas has been hard hit with a couple of different tropical depressions and storms already in the last couple of weeks. so adding more insult to injury with all this moisture, we're going to likely see river flooding as well as flash flooding from so

england. the outer banks, they see a ton of storms. huge storms all the time. the trees and buildings used to it. eastern new england, the leaves are still on the trees and may do more damage out there on the cape. waiting for tonight to see how that plays out. radar, of the storm, ron in the last rain band from the storm and probably in sunshine in an hour or two. winds in delaware and maryland, no big deal. wildwood to atlantic city, gusting 20 to 30 miles per hour. so really the mid-atlantic not an issue. as the storm heads northwards, notice cape cod far to the east there. that's why it's going to see the stronger winds. rain showers moving up into new england and long island. you have to be out there on the end of long island to be hit by the storm. as far as the stormwise, a different view. hurricane warnings for cape cod. large waves are now arriving and that forecast path brings the storm closest to eastern new england right around 10:00 p.m. tonight for the reporters blowing in the breeze out there. i think we have escaped this one. it is underachieved. >> all right. bill karins,

they wanted us to proceed. they asked us to keep him on the phone and keep him talking. the lunch hours was just ending when the gunman walk under to the discovery channel headquarters just outside of washington waving a handgun and ordering everyone in the lobby to stay still. we now know the suspect was james jay lee whose long list of demands included a change in discovery channel programming. as word of the hostage situation spread, nbc news producer called discovery channel general number. suddenly lee himself picked up the phone. >> no one has been shot. >> do you have a gun? >> i have a gun and i have a bomb. i have several bombs strapped to my body ready to go off. i have a device that if i drop it, if i drop it i'll explode. >> reporter: decided against reporting the conversation until the situation was over. while lee held three hostages at gunpoint most of the building's 1,900 employees were told to evacuate and did. including all the children in a day care center on the first floor. >> someone came to me, came to me and said, don't go into the lobby. there's some action goin

downgraded to a category 1 storm. nbc's michelle franzen joins us now live from chatham, massachusetts. what is the scene like there? >> certainly, the preparation the last two days, preparing for the worst what could have been a direct hit, shaping up to be a direct hit from hurricane earl here on cape cod that is not shaping up to be the case at this hour. however, still a significant storm, as bill just mentioned a got category 1 significant winds and nantucketed expected to still take the brunt of hurricane earl. right now though, very calm, in the bay, a protected area of chatham here. there are still some people out on the beach here, taking stock of this calm weather before the storm rolls n we have had had a shower just a short time ago of the outer bands of this storm but certainly a lot of people were preparing, boarding up their houses, moving boats to safer areas and also just stocking up. >> just got some water and mostly dry goods just in case refridge rater is down. >>> it is chaos, utter, utter kay, i don't we were just in there standing in line for literally 20 minutes. peop
